Short answer: Descript edits the whole episode; Submagic dresses up the clips. If you record a weekly show and have no editing setup yet, Descript alone can record, clean up, cut clips and caption them — Hobbyist is $24/month (or $16 billed yearly) for 10 media hours. If your episode is already edited somewhere else and the bottleneck is making clips look like scroll-stopping shorts, Submagic is the narrower, faster tool — Starter is $19/month (or $12 yearly) for about 15 clips of up to 2 minutes.

The episode is out. You know three clips a week would bring new listeners, but every clip means scrubbing the timeline, typing or fixing captions, picking a style that doesn't look cheap — and by the time you've done one, the next recording day is here. The two tools people compare for this sit at very different points in that process, so the right pick depends on where your hours actually go.

We haven't run either tool on a podcast episode yet. Everything below comes from both companies' pricing pages and help centers (checked November 5–6, 2026). Most "Submagic vs Descript" pages online are written by one of the two companies or generated by comparison directories; this one links to both and earns a commission only from Submagic.

Descript prices are per person, and yearly billing saves up to 35%. Its AI tools draw on monthly AI credits (400 Hobbyist, 800 Creator, 1,500 Business; Free gets 100 once). Submagic's yearly billing saves up to 41%. Submagic's AI extras cost 1–3 credits each on top of the 3-credit upload, so the "≈ videos" figure drops if you use them on every clip, and silence removal, bad-take removal and AI hook titles start at Pro.

What a weekly 1-hour podcast would cost

Say you record one hour a week (about 4–5 hours a month) and want three clips per episode (about 13 a month).

Choose Descript if…

  • You're starting from raw recordings and don't have an editing setup yet — one tool can record (Rooms), clean up audio, cut filler words, make clips and caption them
  • Your episodes need real editing: removing tangents, retakes and "ums" across an hour
  • You record remote guests and want separate tracks
  • You'd rather pay one subscription than two

Honestly, if you have nothing yet and a weekly English-language show, Descript on its own may be enough. Its captions are included on every plan.

Choose Submagic if…

  • Your episode is already edited (in another editor, or you publish it as recorded) and the clips are what keep slipping
  • You want trending short-form caption styles, emojis, B-roll and zooms applied from a template instead of building them by hand
  • Your clips are short: up to 2 minutes on Starter, 5 on Pro
  • Your show is in a language Descript doesn't transcribe, such as Japanese or Korean

Submagic won't edit your full episode — uploads over 30 minutes don't fit any plan — and there's no mobile app; you upload from a phone browser but edit on a computer.

Languages

Descript transcribes 25 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese (BR), Italian and Hindi. Japanese, Korean and Chinese are not on that list, although it can translate captions into 61 languages. Submagic's official languages page lists 49 caption languages, including Japanese and Korean. If your podcast isn't in English or a major European language, check this before anything else.

FAQ

Q. Can Submagic edit a full 1-hour podcast episode?

No. Each upload is capped at 2 minutes on Starter, 5 on Pro and 30 on Business (Submagic help center). Its Magic Clips feature, which makes clips from longer videos, costs 8 credits per run. For editing a whole episode, Descript is the tool built for that job.

Q. Does Descript add animated captions to clips?

Yes. Descript's pricing page lists dynamic (animated) captions as unlimited on every plan, including Free, with stock styles or your own choice of font, colors, word highlighting and position.

Q. Which one is cheaper for a weekly 1-hour show?

For editing the whole show, Descript Hobbyist ($24/month, or $16/month billed yearly) includes 10 media hours, more than a weekly 1-hour show records. For captioning only finished clips, Submagic Starter ($19/month, or $12/month billed yearly) covers about 15 clips of up to 2 minutes.

Q. Do they work for Japanese or Korean podcasts?

Submagic's official languages page lists Japanese and Korean captions. Descript transcribes 25 languages, and Japanese, Korean and Chinese are not on that list; it can translate captions into 61 languages, including Japanese and Korean.

Q. Can I try both for free?

Descript Free gives 60 media minutes a month and exports at 720p with a Descript watermark (help center). Submagic's free trial lets you upload and edit 3 short videos with no credit card; watermark-free downloads need a paid plan. Submagic does not offer refunds.
